BIOS2 is committed to integrating the values of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into the program (management structure and program environment). In 2021, we decided to put more energy towards developing a more inclusive culture and environment, and promoting EDI in the program. As a result, we have begun a series of training and reflection activities on EDI issues. In particular, we had a focus group to develop an EDI action plan for the program that will soon be published.
As the first activity of our cohort, we decided to start with the basics: communication. Therefore, we will hold a workshop about Facilitating Engaging and Inclusive Group Discussion.
This workshop will be presented by consultants Emily Yee Clare and Kira Page in two sessions on October 22 and November 12, 2021. This is intented for BIOS2 members and we strongly encourage every Fellow and academic members to participate.
Facilitating Engaging and Inclusive Group Discussion
Training and coaching sessions
Both sessions will be led primarily in English but participants are encouraged to participate in English or in French. Please register for one or the other session here: https://forms.office.com/r/hHjXd4nQS9
Training Session
The first session on October 22nd from 1 pm to 3 pm Eastern time / 10 am to 12 pm Pacific time will be an interactive two-hour workshop. In this session, participants will explore:
- Planning and facilitation strategies to increase engagement in group discussion
- Ways to challenge power dynamics that stifle productive conversation
The content will be applicable in virtual and in person contexts.
Coaching Session
The second session on November 12 (previously planned on October 27) will be a follow-up coaching session, where participants will be asked to come up with concrete situations (e.g. upcoming meetings or group discussions) that they are expected to facilitate. The group will work together to think about the design and facilitation of those discussions with the goal of increasing engagement and inclusion.
The workshop will be conducted by Emily Yee Clare and Kira Page:
Emily Yee Clare has worked at McGill University and the University of British Columbia implementing group dynamics and equity, diversity, and inclusion programming. They have 10 years of experience as a facilitator and enjoy creating interactive and dynamic spaces to better hold complex conversations.
